Strategies for negotiating a job offer with a lower salary than my current earnings
The Question
I recently received an employment offer, but the proposed compensation is lower than my current salary. What are the most effective strategies for negotiating this offer to reach or exceed my current pay level?
Answer
Receiving an offer below your current salary can be disappointing, especially when you are genuinely interested in the role. You do not need to accept or reject it immediately. Thank the employer, express enthusiasm, and ask for a short period to review the complete package before responding.
Prepare a counteroffer based on the role’s responsibilities, your relevant experience, measurable accomplishments, and current compensation data for comparable positions. Choose a specific target and a minimum amount you could realistically accept. You might say: “I’m excited about the opportunity. Based on the scope of the role and the experience I would bring, I was hoping for a base salary of $X. Is there flexibility to move the offer to that level?” Your current salary can provide context, but a business-focused explanation of the value you bring will usually make the request more persuasive. Keep the tone collaborative and avoid implying that you will accept before the final terms are settled.
If the base-salary range is firm, consider negotiating the total package. A signing bonus could offset the first-year difference, while an earlier compensation review with clearly documented performance criteria may create a path to higher pay. You can also discuss the job title, annual bonus, paid time off, retirement contributions, education support, remote or hybrid arrangements, and flexible hours. Compare recurring compensation separately from one-time payments, and account for benefit costs, commuting, workload, advancement potential, and any compensation you would forfeit by leaving your current employer. Ask for all revised terms in writing. If the employer cannot bring the package close enough to your minimum, it is reasonable to decline respectfully; whether the opportunity is still worthwhile depends on your finances, career goals, and the value of the full package.
