How to effectively answer questions about why you want a specific role

These questions can feel broad, but the interviewer is usually giving you an opportunity to connect your experience, interests, and goals to the actual position. A strong answer should sound specific and genuine rather than like praise that could apply to any employer.

Build your response around three connections. First, identify one or two responsibilities in the job description that genuinely interest you. Next, explain how your experience, strengths, or past accomplishments relate to that work. Finally, describe what you hope to contribute or develop in the role. For example: “I’m interested in this position because it combines customer research with product planning. In my current role, I’ve enjoyed turning customer feedback into practical recommendations, and I’d like to use that experience while taking on broader ownership of product decisions.” If asked why this particular employer, add a specific detail you learned from its public materials, such as its products, customers, mission, or current initiatives, and explain why that detail matters to you.

Before the interview, mark three phrases in the job description that match your interests and prepare one brief example showing relevant experience. Practice a 45-to-90-second response, but remember the ideas rather than memorizing every word. Avoid making compensation, convenience, or simply needing a job the entire answer, even when those considerations are valid. Also avoid vague statements such as “It seems like a great opportunity” without explaining why. The most effective response is accurate, focused on the role, and supported by evidence from your own experience.
