It is reasonable to want clarity about pay before investing significant time in an interview process. In most situations, the first conversation with a recruiter or hiring contact is a professional time to ask about the compensation range, especially if the job posting does not include one. If the employer raises compensation first, you can discuss it then rather than waiting for a later stage.

A straightforward question works well: “Before we move forward, could you share the budgeted compensation range for this position?” You can also ask whether the figure refers only to base salary or includes bonuses, commissions, equity, or other compensation. If a range was posted, confirm that it remains current and ask where the employer expects a candidate with your experience to fall within it.

If the first interview is focused entirely on your qualifications and there is no natural opening, ask near the end when invited to raise questions, or contact the recruiter before agreeing to another round. Detailed negotiation usually makes more sense after the employer has indicated serious interest or presented an offer, when the responsibilities and complete benefits package are clearer. Practices and pay-transparency requirements vary by location, so consult current official guidance if you need to know what an employer must disclose. You do not need to apologize for asking; keep the question neutral and frame it as confirming that the opportunity is mutually workable.
