Advice on how to begin a career transition
The Question
I am considering a major shift in my professional path, but I am unsure of the initial steps to take. What is the best way to start exploring new industries and planning a successful career change?
Answer
A major career change can feel overwhelming because you are trying to choose a destination before you have enough information. You do not need to commit immediately. Start by defining what you want to change and what you want to preserve, such as the type of work, industry, compensation needs, schedule, location, advancement opportunities, or sense of purpose.
Next, identify two or three possible industries rather than researching every option. Review current full-time job descriptions for roles that interest you and record the skills, responsibilities, and qualifications that appear repeatedly. Compare those requirements with your existing experience, including transferable abilities such as project management, client communication, analysis, leadership, or problem-solving. This will help you distinguish genuine skill gaps from experience you simply need to describe differently.
Then speak with several people who currently work in each target field. Ask what their day-to-day work is like, what newcomers commonly misunderstand, which skills matter most, and how people typically enter the field. Treat these conversations as research rather than requests for a job. You can also test your interest through a short course, industry event, professional association activity, or small portfolio project before making a larger commitment.
Finally, create a transition plan with a target role, the skills or credentials you need to develop, a realistic timeline, and any financial preparation required. Update your resume and professional profile around the needs of that target role, emphasizing relevant results rather than presenting yourself only through your previous job title. Your first decision does not have to be permanent; the goal is to gather enough evidence to choose a promising direction and take one manageable step toward it.
