Do recruiters consider professional certifications?

The Question

How much do recruiters take professional certifications into account when evaluating job candidates?

Answer

It is understandable to wonder how much weight professional certifications carry when recruiters and hiring managers review applications. In short, certifications do matter for many roles, but they rarely stand alone as the main decision factor.

Across U.S. human resources professionals, skilled credentials—including industry and professional certifications, microcredentials, apprenticeship credentials, and badges (not degrees or required occupational licenses)—are commonly used in hiring. In a 2025 survey of HR professionals, about 78 percent said these credentials are used sometimes, often, or almost always in the hiring process, up from 72 percent in 2021. About 87 percent of HR respondents also reported that they at least sometimes see applicants who hold such credentials. Looking ahead, roughly two-thirds of HR professionals expect industry or professional certifications to remain valuable learning pathways over the next three years.

That does not mean certifications outrank everything else. The same research found that related work experience and demonstrated skills and competencies ranked above education and interview performance in hiring decisions. In other words, a certification is usually strongest when it reinforces experience you can prove on the job, not when it replaces that experience. National labor data also show that people with a certification or license tend to have stronger employment outcomes on average, including higher full-time median weekly earnings (about $1,460 with a credential versus about $1,204 without in 2025 averages). Those figures describe overall patterns, not a guarantee for any one person or role.

Quality and relevance matter as much as the credential name. About one in four HR professionals find credential quality hard to judge, and many say the ability to verify quality has a medium to very high influence on whether they give a credential serious weight. Distinguish certifications (non-government skill credentials) from licenses (government-issued legal authority to practice). For your next step, choose certifications that map clearly to the job description, list them near related achievements on your resume, and be ready to explain what you can do because of them. Exact weighting varies by role, industry, and employer, and no single national percentage for how recruiters score certifications versus experience is available from major surveys.
